December 14, 2016 – Ben Franklin Blitz: To Keep Profits Healthy, Insurers Want You Wealthy and Wise
Facing a possible meltdown of Obamacare membership and cranked-up competition from provider-run plans, health insurers are adapting the advice of Ben Franklin: by making you healthy and wise, they can make themselves wealthy.
And that “early to bed, early to rise” part? Your insurer may connect you to a sleep tracker app, too.
With private and government payers increasingly placing insurers financially at risk for controlling costs, not just playing claims, “we’re on a journey…to managing health,” said former UnitedHealth Group executive vice president Dr. Reed Tuckson, now an independent consultant. “Value-based reimbursement is the driver of change.”
Would you like your health plan to help you find your “anchoring purpose in life”? Victor Strecher, a professor at the University of Michigan School of Public Health and an accomplished entrepreneur, described the health-related advantages of insurers helping members master the purpose-driven life. These included lower risk of stroke and heart attack and less likelihood to abuse drugs. In other words, “values” help “value-driven care.”
Strecher is founder of a start-up called JOOL Health, whose “purpose-driven health engagement” app helps lead you down the path of positive behaviors.
